Meet Our Team

Ali Coleman

Practice Owner (BVSc(Hons))

I grew up in Melbourne surrounded by dogs, cats , birds, turtles and the occasional sheep. Many of my holidays as a kid was spent on a diary farm in Northern Victoria so like most of us in this industry I felt a close bond with animals from a young age.

After graduating from Veterinary Science in 1990, I moved to Adelaide and have lived in Blackwood since 1991. I spent many years traveling to the other side of town for work and have worked in some great practices over the years. I have always worked with small animals and I find it very rewarding to have a great relationship with people and their much loved pets.  I am very fortunate to now and work at Blackwood Vets with Mary Ann.  The Blackwood Area is a very special place to work and live in.

I enjoy updating my knowledge by going to various conferences around Australia. It's also a great way to catch up with colleagues I haven't often seen for many years.

I love just about anything outdoors, but especially love camping on our block at Kangaroo Island.  Great food is a must, both eating and preparing it. Our family includes me,  one hubby,  2 great kids, 2 gorgeous Devon Rex cats(Rexie and Reggie), a Blue Heeler(Roger) and a Labrador Cross(Murphy).  It's not unusual for my daughter and I to be hand rearing baby possums aswell

Mary Ann Harvey

Practice Owner (BVSc(Hons))

I grew up in Adelaide surrounded by cats and dogs and later horses, goats and cattle on a family farm in the Adelaide Hills.  I had my heart set on being a vet since Primary School.

Since graduating in 1983 I have worked in many Adelaide Practices in permanent, part-time or locum positions, including 10 years of mixed practice in Strathalbyn.

Living locally, we share our home with Radar, the Jack Russell Cross, who is a regular staff member of Blackwood Vets, and 2 cats.  Basil is a very smoochy Burmese, and Sprocket a socially awkward but very sweet Domestic Short hair.

Loving all sorts of adventure sports I enjoy sail boarding, water skiing, climbing and playing inline hockey. My main passion is snowboarding and I can't seem to get through winter without a trip to the snow!

My interest in Radiotherapy began with helping my medical specialist father treat cats, dogs and horses in his spare time. I started treating animals in private radiotherapy practice in, and in 2003 we setup a radiotherapy treatment unit here at Blackwood Veterinary Surgery. We are the only Veterinary Practice in SA that can treat superficial skin tumours with radiotherapy.

Ali and I got together and bought the business in October 2007. It has been a fantastic opportunity to put our input on an established practice .Blackwood Vets is a fabulous place to work with lovely clients and a wonderful group of  dedicated and caring staff.

Erin Taylor

Veterinarian (BSc.DVM)

I grew up in the Adelaide Hills and always had many pets including dogs, cats, horses and alpacas. I always knew I wanted to work with animals and was lucky enough to be able to complete my Veterinary Degree here in Adelaide at the University of Adelaide, Roseworthy campus. Having graduated in 2014, I am now thrilled to be working with the wonderful team here at Blackwood Vets. I have a particular interest in small animal medicine and love getting to know people and their fur babies.

Outside of work I enjoy spending quality time with my own fur babies: spoiling my old retired childhood pony Bubbles, riding my new young horse Keera, walking my two little rescue dogs Billy and Henry and cuddling my two cats Winston and Hazel.

Sarah Brownrigg

Veterinarian (BSc(Veterinary Bioscience)DVM)

I grew up in Adelaide but spent the majority of my school holidays on the Yorke Peninsula at my family's cattle property and at the beach snorkelling and kayaking with seals and dolphins.  It was through these experiences that I, not surprisingly, developed a love for animals of all shapes and sizes.  As I got to the end of my schooling I knew that I wanted to find a career that involved animals, problem solving and medicine, and vet ticked all those boxes.

I was lucky to study Veterinary Science close to home at the University of Adelaide's Roseworthy Campus.  Having graduated in the class of 2019, I am very happy to be joining the amazing team at Blackwood Vets, as my first job as a new graduate.

Outside of work I love to get outdoors and spend my time at the beach, swimming, snorkelling, water skiing, hiking, camping and snowboarding in the winter months.

I am very much looking forward to enhancing my Veterinary skills here at Blackwood, and I can't wait to meet you and your fur babies!

Veterinary Nurse (Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, Certificate 1 and 2 in Animal Studies)

Being a Vet Nurse at Blackwood Vets is like having a second family.

I have been nursing at Blackwood for many years now and am due to complete my Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing this year.  You'll mainly find me trying to spend my time out in Reception, I just love talking to all the clients and having a good cuddle with their pets.

But in my spare time, you'll find me at home relaxing with my husband and baby girl, Kiara.  My animals are never too far from my lap.  I have Chuck the Chihuahua X Cavalier, Suki the Pomchi and Belle my snuggly black and white moggy cat.

Sarah Evans

Veterinary Nurse (Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing)

I have been Veterinary Nursing for 11 years and am a qualified Certificate IV Nurse.

My love and passion in life is animals, and I especially enjoy the training of Classical Dressage with Spanish horses.

I finished school to follow my dreams of travelling and performing with these beautiful creatures across Australia and overseas.

My partner in life is my very special 4 year old Jack Russell x Bichon, Bailey. Bailey's new friend is a rescued Tibetian Spaniel, the lovely Rommy. He loves to spend his days at work or on outings, with his mum. He spends his evenings with his two kitty cats, Timmy and Milo.

Veterinary Nurse

My name is Lucy and I love working with animals.  I didn't have many pets as a child as I was allergic to almost everything but thankfully my allergies aren't as bad now.

I started my Veterinary Nursing Career in 2014 in the Riverland at the Berri Veterinary Hospital and since then I've had a massive interest in wildlife.

I live with my four cats, dog and Lorikeet, but I quite often have a few extras that I'm caring for such as kittens and birds.

I have returned to work part time after being on Maternity Leave.

Veterinary Nurse (Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing)

My name is Michelle and I have had a passion for animals from a young age.  I have 2 daughters in Primary School. We have many animals at home- 2 dogs, Chiekko who is a Border Collie and Piper who is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.  We also have 3 cats, Mike, Sullivan and Ooshie, all originally foster cats.  I also breed Mallard Call Ducks, have chickens, a rooster and 5 laying hens. I look forward to providing you pet the best nursing care.

In my spare time, I foster cats and kittens for Cats in Crisis a non-profit organisation and spend as much time with my children doing outdoor activities.

Kat Deakin

Veterinary Nurse

Hey, my name is Kat.

Like everyone else, all I wanted to do with my life was work with animals, I especially love wildlife and grab any opportunity to work with them.  I have worked with elephants in Cambodia and just recently came home from Canada working with Wolfdogs.

At home, I have 4 rescued cats from the RSPCA, 2 crazy boxers and a sulfur crested cockatoo.

Emily Sparrow

Veterinary Nurse

I have always loved animals, and grew up with a variety of different animals.  I realised that I wanted to get in to the animal industry and left university to pursue my passion for the care of animals.  I am currently studying my Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and will receive my certification June 2021.

I currently have 3 beautiful and energetic Kelpie Cross dogs aswell as 2 turtles and an handful of goldfish that live in our pond at home.

Lucy Cunial

Veterinary Nurse (Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing)

The question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" was never a hard one. My answer was always, something to do with animals. I started fulfilling my dream at the age of 12, when I volunteered my weekends at a Boarding Cattery. I worked there for 3 years, before breaking into the Veterinary Industry with a school-based Apprenticeship in 2008.

I have a love for all animals and nursing is my absolute passion. Over the years, I have developed a special interest in surgical nursing, native wildlife and dog grooming.

I live with my husband, James and our menagerie of four-legged friends: Koba a Malamute cross German Shepherd; Barney, a Sharpei Cross Husky; Ivy, our rescue kitty; Harley an Eastern Water Dragon (another rescue!) and 2 Green Tree Frogs, Alfred and Jarvis.

Hanna George

Veterinary Nurse (Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing)

Unlike many, becoming a Veterinary Nurse wasn't what I knew I wanted to do when I was grwoing up.  I had only become really interested since leaving school and discovering what my passion was.

Since finishing school in 2016, I have done some solo travelling around Europe which I loved! And I since completed my Certificate 4 in Veterinary Nursing.

Owning my Shihtzu cross Chihuahua, Holly, has helped me to realise the great dedication I have for animals and how much I'd love to contribute to the way animals are raised and loved.

Grace Pillow

Trainee Nurse

Ever since I was young, I’ve always had a love for animals. It started when I got my first dog at age 5, an English Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Amber. She passed away last year at the age of 14. I have also had rats, Tino and Pez who both lived until the age of 4. I now have two mini rex rabbits, Minnie and Bandit. I also have a new puppy named Pepper, who’s another English Staffy.

As I grew up in Glenalta, I’ve been coming to Blackwood Vets since I was 5 with my first dog Amber, so I’m thrilled to now be a part of the team!!

Outside of work, I really love photography (especially animal photography of course). I am currently studying a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, and due to finish it at the end of 2019.

Front Office Manager (PHD on eating liver treats)

Radar is a highly valued member of our team.  She is very good at looking cute, especially good at looking like she needs a liver treat to survive, but is most importantly our chief meeter and greeter.  She also has a very good knack at being able to settle nervous dogs.

Customer Service Manager (Looking cute)

He is our beautiful and very smoochy clinic cat.

You may see him from time to time resting on the front counter or popping his head around the corner to say HELLO!  He loves cuddles, food and other cats and dogs.
